- Start with a neutral or solid piece of furniture such as a couch or sofa.
- Neutral walls will create a place for the eye to rest, when incorporating multiple patterns.
- Choose one or two main colors you'd like to incorporate throughout the entire room.
- Now it's time to mix your patterns.
- Accessories such as throw pillows, curtains and rugs are the main pieces you will be using when mixing your patterns.
- Choose your rug first.
- Choose your curtains next.
- Choose artwork that fits your space, goes along with your color scheme, and is proportionate with the scale of your room, furniture and patterns.
- Lastly, choose your throw pillows and other accessories.
- Use at least 3 different patterns in a room. When in doubt, start with two patterns and add more if it is right for you.
- A good mix includes a small, medium and large scale pattern.
- If you are feeling bold, choose a piece of furniture or upholstered chairs with a pattern. Below you will see some great examples of these.
